When you hear it, are you conditioned to think about sharks like I am? Music has the ability to enhance our intended mood1 . If we’re trying to be happier, listening to upbeat music can boost our happiness more.

When I intend on lifting heavy weights, but am feeling sluggish, I listen to a Spotify playlist I call “Movement”. It’s full of empowering songs with strong beats to propel me through my exercises. From Imagine Dragons to BTS, and many others, it’s just a fun listen that makes me want to move.

I usually have my music playing on my computer or phone speakers, filling the room with a steady beat. I prefer to not have headphones on/in my ears because they become a distraction for me. If you’re in the comfort of your own home, or on a solitary walk or ride, this works well. If you’re in a shared space, be kind and keep your music to yourself.

Music can lead to community, also. If you see someone getting a big boost from the music in their headphones, find an opportunity to ask them what they’re currently listening to. It might be the start of an upbeat friendship. If you’re in a small shared gym as is common for apartments, you can offer to share music while sharing the space.
